A question keeps coming to my mind "Is democracy the right system for India, especially when it stands on verge of becoming an economic power?" At the face of it the answer seems to be YES. But if you just think deeper for a while, it leaves you with a number of doubts.
There is no denying that India is in the initial phases of an economic boom. This window of opportunity for India may last for another 20 or 30 years. May be a little more. Where do we see India 20 to 30 years hence? Number 2 economic power in the world? What does that really mean for the country? Status in world notwithstanding, what would it mean to a common man in the country? Would it mean jobs for all, no power cuts, no shortage of housing and drinking water? Would it also mean excellent roads and efficient transport systems? Would it mean almost no curruption and no more infanticide of girl child? Will it mean a correct balance between our population living in rural and urban centres?
The questions keep growing but answers are in realm of uncertainty. Why because, we dont seem to have a plan or we are not progressing according to a plan. What is our master plan? Can someone give it out?
Present democratic structure can only plan for and execute for next five years. Thats because every Government has to go in for election after five years. Which ever political party be in seat of power, it thinks, plans and executes (or falsly promises to execute) issues which have bearing for next five years. These issues are also prioritised as per their vote capturing ability. In such a set up, who is ensuring all round/ wholistic planning and development of the country? Yes, many would say we have 5 yr plans , we have a planning commission. Well.......
This is just a starting point of a debate. Many more aspects need to be addressed. Also, questions like 'if not present type of democratic structure then which type? If not democracy then which other system? All this later. First lets decide whether "The present democratic system is the best suited for wholistic and futuristic planning and development of India?"
